The End of A-to-F Grades? AI Company Acquires Alternative Mastery Transcript System

The classic A-to-F grading system may soon get an AI-powered alternative. According to The 74, New York-based company Legend.org acquired the Mastery Transcript Consortium last month, a nonprofit that has spent years promoting the idea of assessing students through descriptions of their skills rather than through grades.

The concept behind this model isn't new. Dozens of American high schools already use "mastery transcripts" — documents that replace numerical averages with detailed descriptions of academic abilities and, just as importantly, "soft" skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. What's changing now is the engine driving it: artificial intelligence.

How Automated Assessment Will Work

Legend.org is developing AI tools designed to give teachers and students near-instant feedback on written assignments, exams, and even recorded video presentations, according to the source. In practice, an algorithm could analyze a spoken presentation and evaluate not just its content, but also delivery, argumentation, and structure.

For teachers, the promise is less time spent grading and faster feedback for students about their own progress. For students, the advantage would be a more nuanced picture of their strengths, beyond a single letter on a report card.

Questions That Remain Unanswered

The acquisition does raise some natural concerns, however. It remains to be seen how transparent the criteria used by these algorithms will be when assessing hard-to-quantify skills like creativity or teamwork. Universities and employers, too, will need to get used to interpreting these alternative transcripts, which look very different from traditional grade averages.

For now, the project is still in its early stages, and Legend.org plans to test these tools in schools that have already adopted the Mastery Transcript model.
