OpenAI removes text conversation limits in ChatGPT, even for free users

OpenAI has announced a major change for users of the free version of ChatGPT: they will now have unlimited access to text conversations, a feature previously reserved for paying subscribers. According to TechCrunch, the decision applies to both Free plan users and those on the Go plan, an intermediate tier the company launched for markets where the standard subscription is not yet available or is considered too expensive.

What's changing for users

Until now, users who didn't pay for ChatGPT faced daily or hourly restrictions on the number of messages they could send to the chatbot, forcing them to either wait for their quota to reset or upgrade to a paid subscription for continuous access. By removing these caps on text interactions, OpenAI appears to be betting on a strategy of growing its active user base amid increasingly fierce competition in the AI-powered conversational assistant market.

The company has not specified whether other types of interactions, such as image generation or advanced file analysis features, will benefit from the same relaxation of limits. For now, the announcement applies strictly to standard text conversations.

A new button for complex reasoning

Alongside the expanded free access, OpenAI has also introduced a feature called "think," available to users on the Free and Go plans. According to TechCrunch, this button activates a more deliberate processing mode for questions that require detailed analysis or multi-step reasoning, similar to the "reasoning" models OpenAI has developed in recent months.

In practice, users will be able to manually choose when they want ChatGPT to spend more "thinking time" on a question, rather than receiving a quickly generated but potentially less accurate answer. This option was previously harder to access or limited to paying subscribers, and its extension to free users suggests the company's intent to democratize access to advanced reasoning capabilities.
