OpenAI regains ground on Anthropic in the corporate customer race

Published: 21 August 2026

The competition for large corporate budgets is heating up again in the artificial intelligence industry. According to TechCrunch, OpenAI is gaining ground on Anthropic among business users, a shift that undercuts the notion of stable loyalty to a single AI provider.

Data cited by the outlet suggests that companies don't stay committed to one model or lab, but instead switch preferences almost as soon as a new release deemed superior comes along. This behavior, described as volatile, raises serious questions for investors backing both companies about just how solid enterprise revenue really is.

Why "stickiness" matters to investors

In tech industry parlance, the term "sticky" describes a product's ability to retain users over the long term, regardless of alternatives that emerge. For generative AI companies, this metric is critical, since their multibillion-dollar valuations partly rest on the assumption of recurring, predictable revenue from corporate clients.

But if large firms readily switch from Anthropic to OpenAI and back again, depending on which model performs better at any given moment, then enterprise subscription revenue becomes far more fragile than it appears. In practice, contracts signed today don't necessarily guarantee steady usage tomorrow.

The battle for big customers continues

Both OpenAI and Anthropic have invested heavily in attracting large companies, offering dedicated tools for integrating their models into internal workflows, from coding to data analysis and customer support. Anthropic has built a solid reputation, particularly thanks to its Claude family of models, prized for their performance on coding tasks—a segment where the company appeared to have secured a clear edge.

OpenAI's comeback, however, suggests that this advantage isn't irreversible. Every time one of the labs releases a new version with visible improvements, the balance of power among business customers seems to recalibrate almost instantly.

For client companies, this dynamism can actually be beneficial, giving them flexibility and negotiating leverage. For the AI labs and their investors, though, the volatility signals that the battle for enterprise supremacy is far from settled.
