AI Is Changing the Way American Students Learn, New Survey Finds

Over the past four years, generative artificial intelligence has become an inseparable companion for teenagers across the United States, gradually transforming the way they approach homework and learning. According to The 74, the phenomenon has spread quickly and almost unnoticed, coming to shape the daily routines of millions of high school students.

A survey conducted by the College Board last fall reveals the scale of this trend: 84% of high school students said they use AI for schoolwork. About half of them turn to these tools to generate ideas, rework essays, or research topics, according to The 74.

Convenience or a Loss of Skills?

Beyond the striking adoption numbers, the analysis cited by the outlet draws attention to a less-discussed issue: how these tools may be undermining the very learning process they are meant to support. Overreliance on AI for tasks that require critical thinking, planning, or writing can reduce the opportunities students have to practice these skills on their own.

Experts cited in the report warn that when AI generates ideas or essay structures on a student's behalf, the student misses out on precisely the stage where skills like organizing information and building arguments are developed. In effect, the convenience offered by technology risks replacing essential steps in genuine learning.

Using AI Responsibly

The report does not portray artificial intelligence as an outright danger, but instead calls for a balanced approach. Used correctly — as a support tool for initial brainstorming or for clarifying concepts — AI can complement the educational process without fully replacing it.

The real challenge, according to The 74, is drawing a clear line between using AI as a helpful aid and becoming dependent on it as a substitute for one's own intellectual effort. That distinction remains the responsibility of teachers, parents, and, not least, the students themselves.

As the technology continues to make its way into classrooms, the debate over balancing efficiency with genuine learning is becoming increasingly relevant for education systems around the world — including in Romania, where the use of AI in schools is still in its early stages.
